The challenge

Coastal ecosystems are true climate, nature, and people champions, but they are disappearing fast and investment remains low.

Carbon markets offer a major opportunity to fund ecosystem protection at scale, however only 0.3% credit issuance are from blue carbon. This is because the financial, technical, and regulatory barriers keeping the blue carbon market small are structural. Closing the market gap requires more than funding, it requires building the enabling infrastructure.

Impact Goals

By 2035, the Blue Catalyst Fund aims to protect or restore 150,000 hectares of coastal and marine ecosystems, avoid or remove 32 million tons of CO2e over the projects’ lifetime, and unlock $275M of private investment for coastal ecosystems and communities.
